WASHINGTON – The nation’s largest network of congregations and faith-based groups, Faith in Action, today weighed in on what is needed in the next Supreme Court Justice. Faith in Action is an international organization consisting of 39 state-based groups operating in 21 states and three countries. The entity’s executive director, the Rev. Alvin Herring, today issued the following response:

“With thousands of children separated from their families at U.S. borders, millions of children living in poverty, and millions of working families unable to make ends meet, we need a Supreme Court Justice who will center the needs of children and families. The next Supreme Court Justice must put politics aside and represent the views of the mainstream; views antithetical to those advanced by the Trump administration. This is an opportunity to pick a nominee who will unite the nation; who will seek to bridge political divides and build overtures of possibilities.

“We implore President Trump to resist what seems natural and view his selection as a moral decision. As people of faith, we believe selecting a Supreme Court Justice is not just a functional responsibility of a sitting president, it is a weighty assignment that has moral significance.

“Now, more than ever, our nation needs a leader on the Supreme Court who has the capacity to see and empathize with the plight of children and families. Political ideology can no longer be a shield for dangerous policies that harm those most in need of support; religious minorities, undocumented individuals and families, children living in poverty, communities battered by gun violence and working people.”
