Following the President’s speech Tuesday, Faith in Action called for immediate action on critical voting rights legislation

WASHINGTON — Following President Biden’s speech on voting rights, leaders with Faith in Action, a national, grassroots civil rights organization that organized thousands of BIPOC voters in 2020, released the following statements:

Rev. Alvin Herring, executive director of Faith in Action: “The right to vote is sacred. We are thankful that the Biden administration has finally thrown its full support behind repealing the filibuster, which stands as a barrier to passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and Freedom to Vote Act. James 2:26 says faith without works is dead; this is at the crux of Faith in Action’s mission. Our leaders can’t simply pay lip service around voting rights – they must use every tool in their toolbox to preserve our democratic values. Until every American has free and fair access to the ballot box, our nation’s promise of democracy will remain unfulfilled.”

Andrea Marta, chief strategy officer for Faith in Action: “Black and Brown Americans – especially Black women – were the driving force behind the voter turnout that got President Biden and Vice President Harris elected. The administration cannot forget that. Frankly, the historic turnout we saw in 2020 is why voting rights are under attack, and it is more important than ever that the Biden administration stand with the millions of Black and Brown Americans whose voting rights hang in the balance. We need to get rid of the filibuster. We need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and Freedom to Vote Act now. Our future depends on it.”

Faith in Action will also hold a daily prayer vigil for all those who have been impacted by oppressive voting laws from 12:00 – 12:15 p.m. ET, beginning Thursday, Jan. 13 until Tuesday, Jan. 18, featuring both organizers and clergy active in the fight for voting rights. The daily vigil will be broadcast live on Faith in Action’s Facebook.
